Why 16 Days of Activism?
Every year, from November 25th to December 10th, individuals, organizations, and governments come together for 16 days to spotlight the urgent need to eliminate violence against women and girls. These dates are symbolic: they connect the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women with Human Rights Day, reminding us that gender-based violence is not just a personal issue, it’s a fundamental human rights violation.
The theme for 2024, “End Violence Against Women Now,” calls for immediate action. Across the globe, people don orange outfits, light up buildings, and flood social media with messages of solidarity. But the campaign is more than just visual, it’s about tangible change.
Why We Must Act Now
Let’s talk about the numbers. In Kenya alone, cases of gender-based violence have risen sharply. According to UN Women, by early 2024, over 45% of women aged 15-49 reported experiencing physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. Even more alarming, cases of femicide have surged, with over 380 women killed by intimate partners in 2023, and the trend continues to rise. Globally, it’s estimated that 1 in 3 women experiences some form of violence in her lifetime. And these aren’t just statistics, they represent real lives disrupted, families torn apart, and dreams extinguished.
Any Impact so far?
The 16 Days of Activism isn’t just about raising awareness, it’s about action.
In Kenya, local organizations have partnered with law enforcement to establish gender desks at police stations, making it easier for survivors to report cases of abuse.
In South Africa, youth-led initiatives have used storytelling, art, and digital campaigns to challenge harmful gender norms and promote healthy relationships.
In India, NGOs have launched mobile apps to provide survivors with legal advice, emergency contacts, and mental health support.
These efforts are changing lives. Sarah, for example, found refuge in a community center supported by the campaign. There, she received counseling, legal aid, and vocational training. Today, she is a vocal advocate for survivors, using her story to inspire others to break free from the cycle of violence.
