Nurturing Mental Awareness

Being mentally aware of oneself is a fundamental aspect of human consciousness. It involves the ability to reflect upon one’s thoughts, emotions, and actions, and to recognize one’s own existence as an individual. This self-awareness allows us to contemplate our past, plan for the future, and make decisions based on an understanding of our own desires and values. 

The world marks mental health day annually on the 10^th of October to help in creating awareness with this year’s theme being health is a universal health right.  

Becoming aware of your mental health is an important step towards overall well-being. Here are some steps to help you become more aware of your mental health: 

1. Self-reflection: 

Start by taking some time to reflect. Reflect on your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Consider your mood, stress levels, and overall emotional state. This self-awareness can be the first step in recognizing any mental health issues. 

2. Educate Yourself: 

 Information is power and it is always important to get knowledge regarding mental health. Understanding common mental health conditions, their symptoms, and how they can affect your life is an essential aspect. One is able to get reputable sources from online, books and lived experiences. 

3. Keep a Journal: 

Maintain a journal to track your thoughts and emotions. This can help you identify patterns and triggers for your emotions and provide insight into your mental state over time. Through journaling one is able to identify stressors thus one is able to avoid instances that may result in affecting one’s mental health.  

4. Monitor Physical Health: 

Recognize the strong connection between physical and mental health. Ensure you’re getting adequate sleep, eat a balanced diet, and engage in regular physical activity, as these can significantly impact your mental well-being. 

5. Talk to Someone: 

 A problem shared is half solved. It is important to share your thoughts and feelings with a trusted friend, family member, or therapist. Opening up to someone you trust can be a crucial step in acknowledging and addressing mental health issues. 

6. Practice Mindfulness: 

 Mindfulness techniques come in handy in stabilizing one’s mental health. Such exercises include meditation, deep breathing exercises, taking walks among other exercises also do help one to be in tune with their emotions.  

7. Be Open to Change: 

 Change is inevitable and it is important for one to embrace change and be open to adjustments.  

8. Practice Self-Compassion: 

Be kind to yourself and avoid self-criticism. Mental health struggles are common, and it’s okay to seek help and take time to heal. Practicing self-compassion is important as we are able to extend the same compassion to others who will are probably in similar situations. 

9.Get Professional Help 

 A licensed therapist, counselor, psychologist, or psychiatrist can provide the right guidance and treatment for one’s specific needs. One can start by contacting your primary care physician for a referral or searching for local mental health services. 

Remember that awareness is the first step, and it’s okay to ask for help when needed. Mental health is an essential aspect of overall well-being, and taking care of it is a crucial part of living a healthy and fulfilling life. 

Self-awareness can lead to personal growth and self-improvement, as it allows us to identify our strengths and weaknesses and work towards becoming the best version of ourselves. It’s a complex cognitive skill that shapes our identity and influences how we navigate the world around us.
